You may have noticed white flecks or patches on your teeth and wondered how they got there and whether anything can be done to improve their appearance.
What Causes White Patches on Teeth?
There are many reasons for the development of white flecks, lines, or patches on the teeth. These include, but are not limited to:
Early decay
Genetics
Childhood illness
Diet
Excess fluoride ingestion
Trauma to baby teeth
How Can White Patches Be Treated?
Management usually involves a step-by-step process to treat the white areas as gently as possible. This includes:
Fluoride treatment and diet management for early decay
Teeth Whitening
Microabrasion
Enamel Infiltration treatments
Composite Maskingf
Crowns/Veneers

Teeth Whitening
This can help to lessen the appearance of white areas by lightening the shade of the teeth. This results in an improvement in the contrast between the white areas and the rest of the teeth which makes the white patches less noticeable.

Microabrasion
This procedure involves very careful and controlled removal of microscopic layers of the outer enamel surface. This can be very effective for superficial discolouration.

Icon Enamel Infiltration
This treatment is very effective for less superficial discolouration in the enamel. Liquid resin is placed in chemically opened 'pores' in the tooth surface preventing the progression of dental decay and cosmetically removing white spots.

Other Treatment Options for White Spots
More invasive options may be needed for disolouration that extends into the deep levels of the enamel. This may include:
Composite Fillings
Porcelain Veneers
Crowns
The treatment options that are selected depend on a full and thorough consultaiton and it is not always possible to determine which treatment is likely to be most effective for you. Often it is a step by step process to get the right result for you.
